South American Race Reports

So three of the biggest expedition races in South America for 2012 have drawn to a close.  These include the two ARWS qualifiers in Ecuador and Argentian Patagonia, as well as “the world’s last wild race” in Chilean Patagonia.

Team Ecuador took out the title in a time of 63 hours over a 409km course on home soil in the Huairsinchi expedition race against of field of 49 local and international teams.

Team Seagate (pictured above) from New Zealand brought home a convincing win against 31 other teams over the 550km Tierra Viva course in Argentina.  Their time of 78 hours was almost a full day ahead of second place.  The race report of their win can be read here.

Finally, team Adidas/Prunesco lead from the front to claim their fourth consecutive win at the Patagonia Expedition Race in Chile.  The team, comprised of two Kiwis, a Brit and a Spaniard completed the 570km course in an adjusted time of 148 hours.  The race had one of its highest completion rates in its 10 year history, with 10 of the 19 teams making it to the finish line.  Interestingly, this included the first team from South America - Selva/Kailash from Brazil in 8th place – ever to finish the race.  A race report from Stu Lynch (formerly of team Orion Adventure) who was racing with Adidas/Prunesco can be found here.

With the completion of the opening races in the 2012 Adventure Racing World Series, focus now turns to the Godzone Adventure race in New Zealand and the Costa Rica Adventure Race in April.
