FINISH_benallen_auschamps_LCR_celebrate_600x500BRISBANE – It’s exciting times for cross triathlon in Australia with the sports governing body, Triathlon Australia (TA) announcing the Aussie team that will don the Green & Gold to represent Australia on home soil at the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships.

It was a milestone moment for the sport in Australia when the International Triathlon Union announced in May 2015 that Australia had won the bid to host the 2016 World Championships, as this is the first time in the events history that it has been hosted by a nation in the Southern Hemisphere.

Since then the anticipation has grown to fever pitch as over the past season Aussies have been getting ‘Off the Beaten’ track to make the switch to this new and exciting action packed version of the sport of Triathlon to get ‘Down & Dirty’ in an attempt to qualify for the national team.

After four qualification rounds, three of them hosted by the Australian TreX Cross Triathlon Series, the results are out and athletes across the nation are putting final training plans in place as they prepare to take on the world’s best in November.

Robyn Lazenby, Event Director at In2Adventure, the event company that won the bid to host the event in Australia is “thrilled that Australia will field it’s biggest team to date with over 270 athletes set to toe the starting line against the World’s Best in November.  “It is so amazing to see the realisation of a long term dream to see the sport of cross triathlon embraced throughout the nation.  The sport itself  is so exciting, thrilling and tough and it has so much to offer to participants.”

” To see so many first timers, on road triathletes, mountain bikers, weekend warriors  and families taking up the sport, really is the end outcome of a lot of hard work, strategic planning and significant support from Competitors, Triathlon Australia, Destination NSW, our ambassadors Ben Allen and Jacqui Slack and a huge group of supporters who are too many to mention ,who have all been a part of this ten year journey.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely congratulate each and every member of the Australian team who has made it through some really tough qualification rounds to come out on top to take the ultimate honour of representing their country on home soil.  It is an awesome team and we know they will do our country proud.”

“I can’t imagine a better place for cross triathlon to be tested than the rugged mountain ranges of the Snowy Mountains.  We have big ambitions for our sport as part of our soon-to-be released ‘Strategic Plan’ to grow and strengthen triathlon at all levels, which includes creating a culture of success across all platforms.”

Triathlon Australia President Ben Houston concurred with Stewart.

“It’s an exciting time to be leading Triathlon Australia into the next development phase, and supporting major events forms part of that strategy,” said Houston who also went on to praise the efforts of the event organisers, In2Adventure, who has successfully overseen the sport of off-road triathlon in Australia over the past decade – including the highly popular, internationally acclaimed TreX series.

“We’re thrilled to be working with the team at In2Adventure to deliver a world class multisport weekend and new format of our sport that has captured a new market while also providing another option for triathletes.”
