Rogue Squad Heading to NZ

The Rogue squad have finalised two teams that are set to hit New Zealand in early 2013 for two separate adventure races.

In February, team Rogue athletes Craig Edwards and Glenn Seaby will pair up to take on the 24hr ARC (Adventure Racing Coromandel) race on the north island under our sponsor’s name Samurai Sportswear.  Entering its 13th year, the ARC has a long history as the toughest 24hr adventure race in NZ,  dishing up courses that push even the lead teams for the full time period.  Set within the spetacular surrounds of the Coromandel Coast, the ARC has been known to introduce novelty tasks including target shooting, kayak check points in ocean cliff caves and ropes work.  The tough NZ terrain and tougher NZ competition (the field regularly includes former AR world champions) ensures that this challenge will well be worth the trip over.  Each addition of the ARC also includes a back story theme, with the 2013 race tagged as “The Ghost of Jack Bean“.

Rogue have also finalised their team line up for the Godzone Adventure Race in March 2013.  The 4 person co-ed team will be made up of Liam St Pierre, Rebecca Wilson, Leo Theoharris and Ray Deetlefs.  Godzone is a 6 day expedition race that covers the remote wilderness of New Zealand’s south island, finishing at the adventure capital of NZ, Queenstown.  The race in 2012 included ocean paddling, back country hiking, white water paddling, abseiling and mountain biking over a 500km+ course and the 2013 course promises to be just as gruelling.

Whilst this will be the first expedition length race for 3 of the team members, the squad has a significant amount of adventure racing and outdoor experience and are confident of making it to the finish line in one piece.  Preparation has been going well with Leo, Bec and Liam taking out a win in the mixed division of a 5hr rogaine recently (an event organised by Ray) and the boys taking out a win in the mens division (second overall) at the 18hr Darkside AR champs back in September.  Perhaps the biggest difficulty the team will face is preparing for the cooler NZ conditions and rugged terrain over a Queensland summer!

Best to luck to both teams in their preparation.  It already sounds like some exciting training adventures are being lined up for the coming months.
