Fitness icon Guy Andrews wants age-group title at Australian Cross Triathlon Championships in Bendigo

ga-bike-400There is seemingly nothing that Australian fitness icon and endurance athlete Guy Andrews cannot do, and when the 44-year-old Gold Coast native lines up on the start of the 2014 Australian Cross Triathlon Championships in Bendigo, Victoria (13-14 Dec), he will be looking to add yet another title to his already stellar palmarès.

Andrews, who has recorded two top 10 TreX off-road triathlon finishes this season in the elite men’s open division will be looking to end the year with an age-group title after having spent the better part of the year recovering from a broken wrist suffered on the mountain bike in March.

“I have not ridden any of the tracks in Bendigo,” said Andrews of next week’s race at the Crusoe Reservoir. “I have been getting fitter and fitter as the year goes on and I think I have my form dialled in, so I am looking forward to rolling into town a few days early for a recce and settle in.

“I am getting to the age now where I feel great training and racing, but I’m just nowhere near the open guys at the moment,” he continued. “I guess that’s just part of that ageing process, so I will race age group for this race and push myself to the limit to get that title – after all, who doesn’t want a title?”

For the former Australian Surf Ironman champion and three-time Uncle Toby’s Ironman series winner, Andrews now uses three decades of elite level competition across Surf Ironman, adventure racing, mountain biking and on- and off-road triathlon to help others – both pro and amateur – realise their health and fitness goals through Guy Andrews Adventure.

“I thrive on competition and love being in shape,” said Andrews. “I also enjoy helping others live happier, healthier lives and the best way I can do that is to lead by example.

“I think people put themselves under too much pressure rather than understanding I just expect them to do their best and reach their own goals.”

Andrews admits one of the main draws to TreX and the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships is the family atmosphere that caters to all ages and skill levels.

“The one thing I really like about TreX is the overall experience,” said Andrews. “Athletes can go down and camp or stay at a local hotel and enjoy the whole weekend’s festivities that are designed for everyone in mind.

“It is so important for the whole family to get involved in sport and outdoor activities if we wish to move Australia forward in terms of healthy living which can start in Bendigo next week.”
