I might be biased, but Sandridge Beach in Port Melbourne, where I run five group kayaking sessions each week, is the best paddling spot in the city. It is relatively sheltered, but still offers up some fun waves and downwind play when the wind is right.
If flatwater is more your thing, there’s obviously the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers, but I’d also highly recommend Lysterfield Lake for a fun brick session. You can paddle, ride and run all at the one location.
