XTERRA Grabouw 12K on February 24th

While running conditions may be cold and blustery in the U.S., it’s summertime in Grabouw, South Africa. It’s also just a month away from the XTERRA Grabouw 6K/12K, which gives you a great reason to turn your winter vacation into a racecation. Grabouw’s beautiful Mediterranean climate is perfect running weather, and the region prides itself on healthy living, outdoor adventures, and some of the best orchards and wineries in the world. And if you need any more incentive to sign up, the XTERRA Grabouw Trail Run follows the same run course as in the XTERRA Grabouw off-road triathlon. Both will be held on February 24th.

“We started the run so that trail run enthusiasts could be part of the great XTERRA vibe that surrounds Grabouw for the off-road triathlon,” said race director Sarah Marx.

The trail run allows runners to experience the beauty of Grabouw and will take you up wooded climbs and then back down to the beach along Eikenhof Dam. Varying between jeep track and single track, the trail run leg will take runners up slopes and along certain trails that are not accessible to mountain bikers, giving runners spectacular views that will be well worth the effort to get there.

“This run is a great challenge to test out your training,” added Marx. “Although you will be able to stretch the running legs initially on jeep track, it won’t be too long before the scramble starts. After the main climb and the following descent, the trail run will bring you along the shores of the Eikenhof Dam, so save some energy for the sand.”

Located just about an hour southeast of Cape Town, Grabouw’s mild Mediterranean climate, fruit orchards,  and local wineries make it a popular tourist destination – even more so when the weather is so cold in North America and Europe.

Marx recommends that athletes visit the Peregrine Farm Stall and the Hickory Shack to experience healthy, local food from the Elgin Valley, including fresh bread, organic produce, and slow-cooked spare ribs. She also recommends Trail’s End, which is a cozy hotel for athletes and adventure enthusiasts. It includes a pool, yoga classes, bike storage, healthy food, and of course, prime access to the trails.
