Wild Descent, presented by 100% PURE Racing (the organisers of the GODZone adventure race), is a multi-day, expedition-style kayak race held between the 17th and 20th January, 2013.
This is the first instalment of a series of races to be held over the coming years that will explore New Zealand’s most spectacular waterways. Wild Descent is part kayak expedition, part adventure, part race, taking participants through some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable on a journey from start to finish.
Entry is now open to pairs and to teams of three or four. As this is an “unsupported” event, participants will be required to carry certain items of equipment and supplies with them for the duration of the event. Kayaks will be provided for all and these will be used to carry equipment in the manner of a true expedition.
The route, in this edition of the event, will traverse a distance of approximately 260km, travelling from Wanaka and finishing at the Pacific Ocean on the east coast of New Zealand. Teams and pairs will be expected to kayak in a variety of challenging conditions from long sections of white water, through narrow gorges, to slower moving hydro dam-created lakes. The route will be demanding physically, will test teams in many different ways, but will create a huge sense of achievement to those who complete the distance, all within a social format.
