The Lake Hayes Triathlon is New Zealand’s oldest surviving triathlon, first held in 1983. This biannual triathlon consists of an Olympic Distance Option (1500 metre swim or 4km paddle, 40km bike, 10km off-road run) or Sprint Distance (750 or 4km,20,5), situated in and around the beautiful and iconic Lake Hayes.
Held in the Christmas and Easter holiday breaks each year, the event has fostered the growth of Summer Triathlon over the years, and its history is made more remarkable by the caliber of entrants that have gone on to become household names in the sport throughout the world.
