Whangamata Adventure Race

We are excited to announce the next Adventure race is the 24th of October 2015. The location for this race is outstanding. It’s going to be a great race so get your teams of 2,3 or 4 together and start training!

The race options are 3hr, 6hr or 24hr. See below for more details.

Adventure Racing
Adventure Racing is an exciting & challenging team sport. It involves travelling on foot and by mountain bike to collect checkpoints marked on a map. The course will take teams on an exciting adventure along remote beaches and through beautiful native bush and forestry. The course will be kept secret until the day of the race and you will receive your maps 3hrs before race start so you can plan your strategy and route choice.

Disciplines
Mountain biking – the mountain biking will take place on forestry roads and single track.

Trekking – the trekking will be a mixture of trails, beach, native bush and forestry.

Navigation – the navigation in the 6hr race will be at a beginner level. The 12hr & 24h events will feature off track bush navigation. Be prepared to use your compass and traverse some tricky terrain.

Kayaking – There is a kayak option for the 24hr race. The kayak will be on a harbour but you must be competent kayaking in wind, chop and tidal currents. Single and double kayaks are allowed. The kayak option will only run if we get more than 5 teams entered in it.

Mystery activities – these will be revealed on the day. Previous mystery activities have included clay bird shooting, suduko, MTB seesaw, mud run, paint ball shooting, stand up paddle boarding and golf!

Difficulty
3hr Novice Race

The 3hr novice race is designed for people who haven’t done an adventure race before and want to give one a go. It will be very basic and easily managed by anyone new to the sport or exercise; but you wont miss out on the beautiful surroundings, mystery activities and excitement of an adventure race.

To complete the 3hr race you will need to be able to walk/jog approx. 5km off road, and mountain bike 10 – 15km.

The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 3 hours

If you have any questions please get in touch, we will be happy to help. Click here for contact details.

6hr Race

The 6hr event is designed so a beginner to adventure racing can complete the course. The navigation in the 6hr event will be based around tracks, roads and rivers making it achievable for those new to navigation.

The use of optional checkpoints means that the 6hr event will still be a challenge for intermediate level competitors who have some experience in adventure racing.

To complete the 6hr event you will need to be able to jog/walk approx. 10km off road, and mountain bike approx. 25km on forestry roads and farmland (distances will be longer if getting optional checkpoints).

The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 6 hours

24hr Race

This 24hr event is designed to be an exciting challenge for those who are ready for the step up from a 6 or 12 hour race. If you have previously competed in a 6 or 12 hour race then this is for you. There will be multiple route choice options for the novice to experiences so depending on your navigation ability and speed you will be able to participate.

This race features some off track bush navigation and route choice.

The winning times for the 24hr race generally range between 18-22 hours and most teams are in with in 25 hours. Because of the number of route choices you and your team shouldn’t be stuck out there for hours and hours.

There are two option kayak and non kayak.

For those competing in Godzone next year this will be a great training race for you and your team.
